The Ptolemy Lighthouse is a misleading topic to many. In actuality the Ptolemy Lighthouse was a join construction project between Ptolemy I Soter (reportedly Alexander the Great’s favorite general and at the time future ruler of Egypt) and Governor Satrap. The lighthouse is more commonly known as the Lighthouse of Alexandria, of course because it is built on the island of Pharos in Alexandria.
The Ptolemy lighthouse was built around the third century BC to serve as a landmark and lighthouse for the island of Pharos. Estimates place the great tower at about one hundred and fifty meters tall, making it the third tallest man made structure on earth for hundreds of years (after the two great pyramids). It was identified as one of the wonders of the modern world by Antipater of Sidon. Read the rest of this entry »
A deadly tornado in Iowa killed six people on Sunday. The tornado in Iowa touched down at 6pm yesterday. Apparently the tornado was very very large, a man described it as looking like a black wall. The tornado started in the Iowa town of Parkersberg and moved 10 miles north before dissipating. Another tornado touched down in Dunkerton, but it was mainly a rural area so no one was hurt although a lot of damage was done to forests. Iowa declared a state of emergency in the towns.
Apparently the storm also brought other activity as hail as big as nickels. Tornadoes were reported in several states including tornadoes in Texas, Kansas, and Minnesota.
I personally have never seen a tornado, let alone a tornado in Iowa, and I hope I never will. They sound scary, but I guess all natural disasters are. How big was the earthquake in China the other day? I think it was huge but I’m not sure quite how big it was. Life in Canada can be cold, but at least we don’t get nearly as many natural disasters as elsewhere in the world. The worst we ever have is a hurricane, and I think lower down the east coast probably has bad ones too.
The Mars lander photos finally started getting sent home yesterday, three months after it began it’s mission to document the north pole of Mars. It was a 422 million mile trip through space, but I really thing NASA scientists feel these pictures of Mars were well worth the trip. These photos from Mars lander are probably considered million, or maybe even billion dollar photos.
I wanted to display some photos here but there are not stock photos I could find on the Internet. I don’t like to use pictures that aren’t stock photos because you never know when you might get in trouble.
Of course the big question is “is there life on Mars” and truthfully they still really don’t know. I think it’s hard to swallow that there is, or ever was life on Mars. If there was something so close we’d probably know before we even went to Mars. Not finding anything at this point in the mission just really confirms that fact, but still these photos of Mars are beautiful and everyone should check them out today. Read the rest of this entry »
